Ruffled Granny Square Skirt With Pockets – Step-by-Step Pattern

Before You Start

  • This is a customizable, size-inclusive skirt using two identical large granny squares.
  • Perfect for using up leftover squares or making them fresh.
  • Includes waistband (with drawstring), pockets, and optional ruffled hem.
  • You control the size: measure your hip circumference for a custom fit.
  • Choose any color combination and yarn to match your style.

Pattern Notes

  • The skirt is constructed from two granny squares joined together at the sides, leaving spaces for pockets.
  • Waistband uses alternating front and back post double crochet for elasticity and texture.
  • Ruffles are made with sets of 4 double crochets in each stitch and are finished with an extra “flare” row.
  • The pocket is created as you join the sides, and worked once side joining is complete.
  • Instructions assume familiarity with granny square construction, but step-by-step guidance is provided.

How I Made the Crochet Pattern

  • Watched the full step-by-step video, transcribed all methodology and special tricks.
  • Converted all construction details, increases, and joining to written, easy-to-follow instructions.
  • Added clear cues where to add or skip modifications like pockets or ruffles.
  • Focused on customization tips (size, color, fit) to make the skirt tailored to you.

Skill Level

  • Upper Beginner to Intermediate

Finished Size

  • Totally customizable; base squares each half your hip circumference (e.g., hip 40 in → each square 20 in)
  • Length is your preference (depends on square row count and ruffle row additions)
  • Waistband and drawstring can adjust fit
  • Sample: fits S–L with simple yarn/hook changes

Materials

  • Worsted/Aran weight yarn (weight 4), main and accent colors (e.g., Big Twist value)
  • 5.0 mm (H-8) crochet hook
  • Stitch markers
  • Yarn/darning needle
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Optional: Extra scraps for waistband drawstring and tassels

Gauge

  • 7 dc & 3 granny clusters ≈ 2" (5 cm) square, unblocked.
  • Gauge is flexible due to drawstring fit.

Stitch Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • dc = double crochet
  • sc = single crochet
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • fpdc = front post double crochet
  • bpdc = back post double crochet

Special Stitches

  • Granny Cluster: Work 3 dc in one space.
  • Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc): Yo, insert hook around post of stitch from front, complete dc.
  • Back Post Double Crochet (bpdc): Yo, insert hook around post of stitch from back, complete dc.

The Pattern

A) Make 2 Large Granny Squares

Foundation Round

  • Make a magic ring.
  • Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), 2 dc in ring. Ch 2, 3 dc in ring. Repeat * to * three more times (total of 4 corners).
  • Pull tail to tighten ring.
  • Ch 2, sl st into top of starting ch-3 to close.
  • (You should now have 4 granny clusters separated by ch-2 corners.)

Granny Square Rounds

  • For each new round: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), turn your work at start of each round.
  • In each ch-2 corner space: (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc).
  • In each side space (between corner clusters): 3 dc only.

Continue working around, joining each round with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-3. Optionally, change colors at will, always fastening off and joining new color with slip knot.

  • Make the square half your hip measurement wide. (E.g., for 40" hips, make each 20" wide.)
  • Fasten off and weave in ends.

Beginner’s Note: Turn your work after every round for a neat, even square.

B) Join Squares and Prep For Pockets

  • Lay squares on top of each other, right sides facing (wrong side out).
  • With measuring tape, count clusters from top corner down along each edge (e.g., 5 or as needed).
  • Place stitch markers at pocket start and end (e.g., from row 5 to 10).
  • Seam sides above and below markers with a whipstitch, slip stitch, or sc join, leaving the marked section open.
  • Repeat for both sides. Turn skirt right side out.

At this point you have a tube, joined at sides, with a slit on each side for pockets.

C) Adding Optional Pockets

  1. With skirt inside out, join yarn to side edge at lower marker.
  2. Ch 3, dc evenly around pocket opening, working into both square edges.
  3. At bottom of pocket opening, work 3 dc in same st for the curve.
  4. Continue dc up other edge.
  5. Sl st to top of ch-3 to join.

For pocket bag:

  • Ch 3, turn, dc around opening.
  • At base/curve, work 3 dc in same st (as previous row).
  • Continue as established for a total of 10 dc rows.
  • Fold and use sl st or whipstitch to close, fasten off, weave in end.
  • Repeat for second pocket.

Not making pockets? Skip this section.

D) Waistband

  1. With right side facing out, join yarn anywhere at the waist edge.
  2. Ch 3 (counts as dc).
  3. Work fpdc, bpdc alternating around each post for a full round.
  4. Sl st to join.
  5. Optional: Change colors as desired at the start of any row.
  6. Crochet Granny Square Skirt Pattern 3 Save
  7. Repeat round until waistband measures approx. 2" / 5 cm or as tall as you like (video made 5 rounds).
  8. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

The alternating fpdc/bpdc waistband is sturdy and ensures a stretchy fit.

E) Drawstring and Tassels (Optional)

  • With matching yarn, chain a length long enough to tie around your waist loosely (measure directly on you).
  • Weave chain in and out of the waistband rounds (under two posts, out two posts, repeat).
  • Add tassels at each end: bundle several yarn strands, tie at center, and secure to end of the chain.
  • Trim to desired length.

F) Ruffled Hem

First Ruffle Row:

  • Join yarn at any hem stitch.
  • Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 4 dc in same st.
  • 4 dc in next and every stitch around. Sl st to join.
Crochet Granny Square Skirt Pattern 4 Save

Second Ruffle Row:

  • Ch 3, dc in next 4 sts (5 dc worked), work 4 dc in one stitch, 1 dc in each of next 5 sts, repeat around.
  • Sl st to join, fasten off, weave in all ends.

End-of-Section Summaries

  • Granny squares build the base shape—make them as large as half your hip measurement for a perfect fit.
  • Seaming squares together leaves space for pockets (customize size/location).
  • Waistband uses post stitches for stretch and style; drawstring ensures adjustability for comfort.
  • Optional pockets are built into side seams and created after joining.
  • Ruffles give extra flair (add or skip for desired look).
  • The skirt can be customized in color, size, and features—make it truly yours!

Assembly & Finishing

  • Weave in ALL tail ends neatly.
  • Steam/block skirt for drape and shape if desired.
  • Adjust drawstring for snug waist fit.
  • Fluff & trim ruffles and tassels as needed.

Problem & Solution

  • If the skirt is too tight: Add an extra round to the granny squares.
  • If waistband is too loose: Add an extra round of bpdc/fpdc or tighten drawstring.
  • Pocket opening gaps: Seam more tightly, or adjust marker placement when joining.

What You Can Make With These Techniques

  • Shorts, pants, or full-length skirts with the granny square method.
  • Granny square jumpers, cardigans, and accessories using the same basic square.
  • Ruffled scarves, bag flaps, or even cushions using the hem technique.
