Finished Size

  • Customizable. Example (Extra Large):
    • Back: 23.5" width x 25" length
    • Sleeves: 18" from armpit
  • Sizing depends on square measurement and count.

Materials

  • Medium-weight yarn (amount varies by size, approx. 1,200–1,700 yds for adult cardigan)
  • Matching crochet hooks (example: 4.5 mm for squares, 4 mm for ribbing)
  • 6 buttons (or as desired)
  • Yarn needle, scissors
  • Blocking board or pins (optional)
  • Measuring tape

Measurements / Sizing (Optional Schematic)

  • Granny square size: Example 4.7” across
  • Back: width and length = number of squares x square size (e.g., 5 x 4.7”)
  • Front panels and sleeves calculated as described in Pattern section

Gauge (and Stitch Pattern)

  • Make a sample granny square to measure size.
  • Classic granny pattern: 3 dc, chain-1 groups (see your chosen square pattern)
  • Seam and ribbing stitches: standard sc, slip stitch, and sc BLO.

Stitch Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • BLO = back loop only

Special Stitches

Slip Stitch Join (in Back Loop Only):
With good sides together, insert hook through back loop of corresponding stitches on both squares, yarn over, pull through both loops and working loop.

Single Crochet Decrease (sc2tog):
Insert hook in next stitch, pull up loop; insert in next, pull up loop; yarn over, pull through all loops on hook.

Back Loop Only (BLO):
Work into the back loop only for a ribbed effect and flexibility.

The Pattern!

Granny Square Calculation

  1. Crochet a sample square and measure it.
  2. Calculate needed squares for each section:
    • Back panel: (Width in inches / square width) x (Length in inches / square length)
    • Front panels: (Width / sq width) x (Length / sq length)
    • Sleeves: (Length from armpit / sq width)
    • Pockets: Add 2 squares

Example: For 4.7” squares and a back width of 23.5”, you need 5 squares. Adjust as needed for your size.

Odd/Even Square Widths

  • If the width is odd: Leave a square gap for the neck opening.
  • If the width is even: Make the top edge(s) of the uppermost front squares smaller by working 2 dc in each chain-1 space (instead of 3) and omitting chains between. Corners: 2 dc, ch-2, 3 dc.

This adjustment creates the neck gap needed for a comfortable fit.

Granny Square Construction

  • Work as your chosen granny pattern instructs.
  • For smaller upper edge on even panels, see above adjustment.
  • Make all squares, then block gently.

Block using pins and a damp towel; specialty boards or chopsticks work well.

Panel Joining – Vertical (Columns)

  • Lay out squares as planned; arrange with motifs facing the same direction.
  • Use slip stitch join in back loops only. Fold squares with good sides together, join corner spaces, then slip stitch across each pair of back loop stitches.
  • Fasten off and weave tails.

Repeat for all vertical (column) joins indicated (red lines in demonstration).

Panel Joining – Horizontal (Rows)

  • Rotate panels and join with slip stitch join as above, matching stitches carefully.
  • For pocket panels, layer pocket square atop panel, join along edge through all layers.

Cardigan Panel Assembly

  • After joining all panels (back, fronts, sleeves), seam together at shoulders and sleeves using slip stitch join (green lines in demonstration).
  • Folding: Fold along shoulder seams, then fold over sleeves.
  • Seam along sides and length of sleeves.

Pocket Attachment

  • On front panels, attach pocket squares during vertical join and seam bottom/side during ribbing and button band construction.
  • Leave top edge of pocket unattached for opening.

Ribbing (Sleeve Cuffs, Hem, Button Band)

Sleeve Ribbing

  1. Scrunch up sleeve edge with sc decreases: Insert in corner space, pull up loop, insert in next, pull up loop, yarn over, pull through all.
  2. Repeat decrease around sleeve.
  3. Slip stitch to join.
  4. Chain to desired rib width (e.g., 13 for 3” rib), sc in second ch and across (12 sc).
  5. Slip stitch into next two stitches, turn, sc BLO across rib stitches.
  6. Repeat around, then seam ends of ribbing with slip stitch join on inside of sleeve.

Hem Ribbing

  1. With smaller hook, sc across bottom edge (working through both pocket and front panel layers where pockets are).
  2. Chain to desired rib width (e.g., 8 for 1.5”), sc in second ch and across (7 sc).
  3. Repeat slip stitch/sc BLO pattern as for sleeves.

Button Band

  1. With same size hook as body, sc up front opening (through ribbing and sides of squares, joining pocket sides).
  2. When reaching the neck, sc in each corner.
  3. Work 3 rows sc, then row for buttons:
    • sc in first 4 sts, ch-2 (skipping next 2 sts), sc in next, repeat for all buttons.
    • On next row, sc in each stitch and work 2 sc in each buttonhole.
    • Work 6 rows in total.

Assembly & Finishing

  • Weave in all tails securely.
  • Block finished cardigan for the neatest fit.
  • Sew buttons in line with buttonholes.
  • Add pocket lining if desired or reinforce with extra stitches.
  • Wash gently and dry flat.

Solution of problem

  • If squares do not match up perfectly, block individually to correct sizing.
  • If neck opening is too small, adjust the top edges of squares as detailed under "Odd/Even Square Widths".
  • If rib is too tight or too loose, adjust length or stitch count for fit.

What you can make by using these stitches

  • Granny square jackets, vests, shrugs
  • Cardigans for all sizes and ages
  • Blankets, scarves, or bags with matching squares
  • Custom pockets, cuffs, collars
