Beginner Shoulder Bag Crochet Pattern

Before You Start

  • This shoulder bag is crafted entirely with basic single crochet stitches—perfect for beginners and relaxing for experienced crocheters!
  • The bag is made up of two rectangular panels and a long, sturdy strap, all seamed with easy slip stitches.
  • Choose yarns from your stash—use one color for a classic look or combine colors for a fun two-tone effect.
  • No shaping or increases needed—just simple rows, counting, and assembly.

Pattern Notes

  • Use the same stitch count on every row so all pieces join up evenly.
  • Your chain counts already include all stitches for tidy edges.
  • If your work seems to curl, it’s normal and will flatten after a few rows and/or when seamed.
  • Loose slip stitches prevent seams from puckering and keep the bag’s edges stretchy.
  • You may work the slip stitch seam on the right or wrong side as you prefer—a visible seam adds handmade character.

How I Made the Crochet Pattern?

  • Rectangular bag panels crocheted flat in rows of single crochet for a dense, sturdy fabric.
  • Strap is built in single crochets for comfort and strength, designed to fit over the shoulder.
  • Everything is seamed with slip stitch for an invisible and flexible edge.
  • Made two identical panels; stitched the strap to both panels for easy, clean assembly.

Skill Level

  • Beginner (a relaxing project for any skill level)

Finished Size

  • Bag: Approx. 27 × 17 cm (10.5 × 6.7 in) per panel.
  • Strap: Approx. 100 cm (1 meter / 39 in) long, 2.5 cm (1 in) wide.
  • Easily adjustable depending on number of rows/chains.

Materials

  • Yarn A: Size 2/fine yarn (e.g., Brown Jeans yarn)
  • Yarn B: Stash, slightly thicker yarn (size 3-4) for contrast or continue with Yarn A for solids
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Measurements / Sizing

  • Foundation chain: 35 ch = approx. 21 cm (8 in)
  • Each panel: 34 sts wide x 22 rows tall
  • Strap: 4 sts wide x 130 rows (or until 1 m / desired length)

Gauge

  • Approximately 13 sc × 14 rows = 10 cm/4 in (after seaming and blocking, not critical)
  • Consistent stitch count on all rows is more important than perfect gauge.

  • Finish off, leaving a tail.

This creates a long, sturdy shoulder strap. You can adjust the strap length as you prefer—measure against your body before fastening off.

Assembly & Finishing

  1. Aligning Pieces:
    • Place the strap and one panel edge to edge, aligning stitches as you go.
    • Start at a panel’s upper corner; with hook and yarn, sl st through both the panel and strap edges, working loosely for stretch.
  2. Sew Around:
    • Continue slip stitching the strap along one side edge, across the bottom, and up the other side of the panel.
    • At each corner, smoothly transition the strap to the next edge—minor improvisation is okay.
  3. Join Second Panel:
    • Repeat: align strap with second panel, slip stitch along three sides as before.
  4. Seam Strap Ends:
    • Finish with strap ends meeting at the same “top” seam; slip stitch together for seamless join.
    • For each slip stitch, insert hook through both strap and panel, yarn over, pull through both layers.
  5. Secure and Finish:
    • Ch 2, cut yarn, pull tail through, and tighten to secure.
    • Use a yarn needle to weave in all yarn tails and hide knots inside the bag.
  6. (Optional) Turn Bag Right Side Out:
    • Flip so seams are inside for a concealed finish, or leave seams out for a bold look.

After assembly, your bag will look neat, sturdy, and minimalist—ideal for everyday use!

Solution of Problem

  • Panels don’t match in size: Count rows and stitches per row before joining; blocking can help fix minor differences.
  • Seam is puckering or curling: Make slip stitches loosely and don’t overtighten as you join.
  • Strap feels too long/short: Adjust the number of rows in the strap to your body while assembling—the pattern is very forgiving.
  • Bag twists or warps: Lay pieces flat and seam carefully, adjusting strap placement to align both panels.

What You Can Make with These Stitches

  • Any size rectangle bag—change panel or strap length for crossbody, tote, or clutch
  • Tablet or book sleeves
  • Pencil case (with zipper sewn in)
  • Mini pouches for small gifts
  • Sturdy baskets (with two short straps for handles)
  • Home decor items like placemats or coasters using the same stitch

Conclusion

This beautiful shoulder bag is proof that simple, beginner-friendly crochet techniques can create something stylish, practical, and satisfying! Using just single crochet, slip stitches, and your favorite yarn, you can quickly make a minimalist bag, customize colors, and finish with a professional look.

If you struggle reading patterns:
Make two single crochet rectangles, crochet a long thin strip for the strap, and slip stitch everything together, lining up the edges.
