Steps

1. Make the Caterpillar Head

  1. Magic Ring: Create a magic ring and crochet 6 single crochets into the ring. Pull it slightly tight.
  2. Round 2 - Increase: Crochet 6 increases (2 single crochets in each stitch) to make a total of 12 stitches. Mark the first stitch with a stitch marker. Pull the magic ring completely tight once you finish this round.
    Save
  3. Round 3-4 - Single Crochet: Crochet 12 single crochets around for two rounds. Replace the stitch marker after the first stitch of each round.
  4. Insert Safety Eyes:
    • Place the eyes between rounds 2 and 3. Position them to your liking and attach the backs securely.
  5. Round 5 - Invisible Decrease: Perform 6 invisible decreases, working into the back loops only of each stitch. This will close the head.
  6. Finish Off:
    • Cut the yarn, leaving a small tail.
    • Use an ultimate finish: Thread the tail through the front loops only of the stitches and pull tight to close the hole.
    • Tie a square knot with the yarn tail from the magic ring to secure the closure. Push all ends inside the head.
  7. Make Antennae:
    • Attach yarn to the top of the head. Chain 3 stitches, cut and pull tight. Use a yarn needle to sew the chain back down for reinforcement.
    • Repeat for the second antenna. Hide all loose ends inside the head.

2. Make the Tail Piece

  1. Magic Ring: Crochet 6 single crochets into the ring.
  2. Round 2 - Increase: Crochet 6 increases for a total of 12 stitches. Use a stitch marker.
  3. Round 3 - Decrease: Perform 6 invisible decreases over front loops only.
  4. Finish Off:
    • Use the ultimate finish (as described in head-making).
    • Thread the yarn ends into the inside of the tail and trim them short. The tail should look like a tiny ball.

3. Make the Body Pieces

Repeat the following steps for each body piece. The creator used 5 body pieces for a rainbow caterpillar, but you can adjust this to your preference.

  1. Magic Ring: Crochet 6 single crochets into the ring.
  2. Round 2 - Partial Increase and Foot Formation:
    • Crochet 4 increases (8 stitches total).
    • In the 5th stitch, crochet: Single Crochet, Chain 1, Double Crochet, Chain 1, and another Single Crochet (this forms a foot).
    • Crochet 1 increase in the next stitch to return to 12 stitches.
      Save
  3. Round 3 - Second Foot Formation:
    • In the first stitch, crochet: Single Crochet, Chain 1, Double Crochet, Chain 1, and another Single Crochet (to form the second foot).
    • Crochet 7 single crochets around the body.
  4. Round 4 - Finish the Feet:
    • Crochet into each of the foot ends to pull them closer together. Use single crochet stitches to shape the feet properly.
  5. Finish Off:
    • Create a fake stitch by threading the yarn over the next stitch and back through the previous one. This blends the rounds for a seamless appearance.
    • Secure the ends by tying them inside the piece. Trim ends.
      Save

4. Assemble the Caterpillar

  1. Prepare Yarn: Use a sturdier yarn (approximately 1 yard) for assembly, with the needle doubled up for added strength.
  2. Thread and Connect:
    • Take the first body piece and thread the yarn needle through the middle of its magic ring.
    • Attach the head by inserting the needle slightly below its horizontal center. Pass back through the body piece’s middle.
    • Continue threading the needle through each body piece's middle and end with the tail.
  3. Secure and Adjust:
    • Tie a square knot with the two ends of the yarn. Pull snugly to adjust tightness and eliminate gaps between segments.
    • Trim yarn ends and tuck them inside securely.
      Save

5. Optional Details

  • Add white details to the eyes using small yarn stitches for a “shiny” effect.
  • To add a keychain, loop the assembly yarn through the keyring during step 4 before securing the ends.

Conclusion

Your adorable crocheted caterpillar is now complete! This fun and versatile creation can be a cute keychain, a playful fidget toy, or just a delightful decorative piece. Customize the body pieces with your favorite colors or experiment with size by adding more segments.
