Crochet Pastry Plush (Little Cake) – Step-by-Step Amigurumi Pattern

Before You Start

  • Familiarize yourself with US crochet terminology.
  • Gather all materials before starting.
  • Use a stitch marker to easily track the start of your rounds.
  • Keep your tension even for consistent shape.
  • Prepare cardboard and stuffing for structure.
  • Always leave a long tail after final stitches for sewing parts together.
  • Embroider or sew with care for a neat finishing.

Pattern Notes

  • All rounds are worked in a spiral unless specified.
  • Place your stitch marker at the start of each round and move it up as you go.
  • Increases: work 2 stitches in the same stitch.
  • Decreases are worked using the invisible decrease method.
  • Only the sixth round of the base uses back loops only for definition.
  • The base and top are joined with neat, even whip stitches through outer loops for a seamless look.
  • For details, add frosting, sprinkles, or other decorations as preferred.

How I Made the Crochet Pattern?

  • Created the base and top as separate circles, increasing progressively.
  • Used back loops on certain rounds to create a decorative ridge.
  • Utilized increases and decreases for shaping both cake and its top.
  • Made and attached small pieces for decorations (like cherry or leaf).
  • Used cardboard circle to reinforce the base.
  • Sewed all parts together and stuffed firmly for a round, plush finish.

Skill Level

Confident Beginner

This project only uses basic stitches (single crochet, increase, decrease) and simple sewing. The most challenging part might be sewing the pieces together securely.

Finished Size

Approx. 8-10 cm diameter, 5-7 cm tall (varies with yarn and tension)

Materials

  • Yarn: Small amounts of various colors (green, pink, red, blue, or your preference)
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry/darning needle for sewing
  • Fiberfill stuffing
  • Cardboard for base insert
  • (Optional) Hot glue gun for base, if desired

Measurements / Sizing

  • Base/Top Diameter: ~8-10 cm
  • Plush Height (without cherry): ~5-7 cm

Gauge

  • Not critical to the project.
  • As a guide: 6 rounds of sc in the round, blocked flat, should measure approximately 4–5cm across.

Stitch Abbreviations

  • MR = Magic ring
  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • inc = increase (2 sc in same stitch)
  • dec = decrease (single crochet 2 together)
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • BLO = back loop only

Special Stitches

  • Invisible Decrease: Insert hook into front loop only of next 2 stitches, yarn over and pull through both loops, yarn over and pull through last 2 loops.

Round 4:

Round 5:

Round 6 (Ridge):

  • BLO, sc in next 4 sts, inc in next st repeat around. (36 sts)

Round 7:

  • BLO, sc in next 5 sts, inc in next st repeat around. (42 sts)

Round 8–10:

  • sc in each st around. (42 sts per round)

End off after the final round, leaving a long tail for sewing.
At this stage, you should have a flat circle with a visible ridge where you worked through the back loop only.

(Optional) Insert Cardboard

Trace the shape of your base onto cardboard. Cut out the circle, then trim it slightly smaller to fit inside the cake’s base. This will help keep the pastry plush sturdy and flat on the bottom.

Round 1:

  • With frosting color (e.g., pink), MR, ch 1, 6 sc into ring. (6 sts)

Round 2:

  • 2 sc in each st around. (12 sts)

Round 3:

  • sc in next st, inc in next st repeat around. (18 sts)

Round 4:

  • sc in next 2 sts, inc in next st repeat around. (24 sts)

Round 5:

  • sc in next 3 sts, inc in next st repeat around. (30 sts)

Round 6:

  • sc in next 4 sts, inc in next st repeat around. (36 sts)

  • Skip 1 st, 5 dc in next st, skip 1 st, sc in next st repeat around.
  • Finish with a sl st. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

After this part, you should have a slightly domed piece with a frilly edge that represents the icing of your cake.

Cherry (Embellishment, Red)

Round 1:

  • MR, 5 sc in ring.

Round 2:

  • 2 sc in each st around. (10 sts)

Rounds 3–4:

  • sc in each st around. (10 sts per round)

Round 5:

  • dec, sc in next 3 sts repeat twice. (8 sts)
  • Stuff lightly.

Round 6:

  • dec around until closed. Fasten off and weave in end.

Leaf (Green, optional)

Row 1:

  • Ch 4, turn. sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, sc in last ch. Finish off with a tail for sewing.

After you have completed the base, top, cherry, and leaf, take a moment to check proportions, and adjust stuffing as needed. The base and top should be the same diameter—if not, adjust rounds accordingly.

Assembly & Finishing

  • Place cardboard into the bottom base if using.
  • Sew base and top together: Working in outer loops, whip stitch neatly around, pausing halfway to stuff firmly.
  • Close remaining seam, shaping as you go.
  • Sew cherry and leaf securely to the top center of “icing.”
  • Use yarn or embroidery thread to add “sprinkles,” crosses, or details to the top.
  • Hide all ends inside.

  • Shape and fluff your finished plush.

Solutions to Common Problems

Problem: Base/top are wavy and don’t match.
Solution: Block the pieces flat before assembly. Check stitch count at end of each increase round to ensure circles are the same size.

Problem: Edges don’t align when joining top and bottom.
Solution: Always join stitch-to-stitch, using outer loops for a neat seam. If needed, add or subtract a round on one piece for a perfect fit.

What You Can Make by Using These Stitches

  • Amigurumi cakes and other bakery plushies
  • Flat circles for coasters or appliqué
  • Decorative elements for larger projects (play food, keychains)
  • Small balls (using just the increase and decrease techniques)
